What is Tree Felling?

Tree Felling is the process of cutting down individual trees and the person carrying this out is known as a Tree Feller. Tree Felling is a dangerous activity if you don’t have the qualifications and experience to carry it out safely.

Tree Felling is a fine art and you need to have extensive knowledge of trees, woodlands and surrounding areas to understand the best way to prune or remove a tree to make sure it falls safely without harming anyone or anything around it. Precision felling is key to the safe removal of trees or large plants.

What will an experienced Tree Feller do?

An experienced and knowledgeable Tree Feller will assess and prepare before they start work. The first step in felling involves assessing the situation, planning the fall, clearing around the base of the tree and preparing an escape path. A qualified Tree Feller will always look upwards as well as around to size up the crown, any dead branches that might fall, dead branches in nearby trees that may be knocked loose, rotten stems that may break, intertwined branches that may affect or prevent the fall, and look for nearby snags that may be hit. They will also consider the lean and crook of the tree and the direction the wind is blowing. Anything that affects the balance of the crown will affect the direction of fall and may also have produced reaction wood. They will keep an eye out for trees that could be knocked over, spring back or toss broken pieces at you and look for obstacles; rocks, stumps, uneven ground that may cause the stem to break or rebound. They will always cut dead and downed trees or snags that could interfere with the felling, limb the lower portions of the tree and clear an escape path before they actually begin cutting the tree down.

The key and priority of Felling are dropping the tree safely to the ground, exactly where you want it, to enable easy removal, with minimal damage to other trees or anything or anyone around it.

What Qualifications do you need as a Tree Feller or Tree Surgeon?

A qualified Tree Surgeon is trained and is an expert in the cutting back and removal of any age trees or plants and will hold CSCS cards and have a City & Guilds NPTC Level 2 accreditation in chainsaw use as well as being compliant with all industry standards and Health & Safety legislation.

Do you need planning permission to cut down a tree?

Many mature trees are protected by tree preservation orders which in general means that you need the council’s consent to prune or fell them. If you are unsure if a tree you want to prune or remove is protected by a tree preservation order then we advise you to contact your local council before you do anything or invite a Tree Surgeon or Tree Felling company around to give you a quote.

Can I cut down a tree in my garden in the UK?

You are permitted to prune or cut down any tree on your land if it is healthy and as long as it is not subject to a Tree Preservation Order or located with a conservation area.

Tree Felling Licences

In order to help protect trees, woodlands and forests, a felling licence from the Forestry Commission is normally required to fell trees. It is an offence to fell trees without a licence if an exemption does not apply.

Tree Felling Licences

It’s an offence to fell trees without a licence if an exemption does not apply. Anyone involved in the felling of trees; owner, agent, timber merchant or contractor must ensure that a licence has been issued before any felling is carried out unless they are absolutely certain that any one of the exemptions applies. If there’s no licence or other valid permission, or if the wrong trees are felled, anyone involved can be prosecuted. You should also check that any company you use is insured and has public liability insurance in place.

We would also advise you to talk to your neighbours to make them aware of your tree felling plans so you ensure they won’t get upset or complain about any trees that you remove.

UK Forestry Standard

The UK Forestry Standard sets out the UK government’s approach to sustainable forestry and woodland management, including standards and requirements, regulations and monitoring, and reporting. It applies to all woodland and woodland operations, regardless of who owns or manages it.

Tree Preservation Order (TPO)

A TPO is made by the local planning authority (LPA), usually, a local council, to protect specific trees and areas of woodland from deliberate damage and destruction. You can contact your LPA to find out if a TPO applies to your proposed project, or if you are in a Conservation area.

Do I need permission to cut down a tree on my property?

Landowners are responsible for all trees within the boundary of their property and you will only need permission to fell or prune a tree in your property if it is covered by a tree preservation order
